Since the 1790s, research into the ancient remains of a number of mammals and various marine life had given rise to the study of fossils.

It wasn't until the early 1800s however, when certain individuals such as Mary Anning and William Buckland happened to discover more reptilian bones. The skeletal remains of enormous creatures such as Megalosaurus and Iguanodon eventually led English geologist Gideon Mantell to write a paper in 1831 entitled "The Age of Reptiles."

This paper was one of the first scientific journals to describe a time in the past whereby giant reptiles roamed the Earth. These reptiles would later be called "Dinosaurs", and thus the concept of dinosaurs was revealed to the scientific community as well as the general public at large.

The discovery of dinosaurs would lead to entirely new understandings of the ancient past as well as having a considerable effect on pop culture for years to come.
